Itchy red bumps from mosquitoes, bedbugs, and fleas look alike at a glance — but their pattern, location, and timing usually give them away. Here's how to tell which is which.

Mosquito, bedbug, and flea bites are the three most commonly confused marks on human skin. All three are small, red, and itchy. But each insect has habits that leave a recognisable signature once you know what to look for.

Mosquito bites usually appear as soft, puffy, round welts that show up within minutes of being bitten. They tend to be scattered and isolated rather than lined up, and they appear on exposed skin — arms, ankles, neck, and face. The itch is immediate and often fades over a day or two.

Bedbug bites

Bedbug bites are the classic case of marks arranged in a line or a small cluster, sometimes described as “breakfast, lunch, and dinner.” They appear on skin exposed during sleep — arms, shoulders, back, and legs — and the reaction is often delayed, sometimes showing up a day or more after the bite. Waking with new rows of itchy bumps you didn't have the night before is a strong hint.

Flea bites

Flea bites cluster low on the body — feet, ankles, and lower legs — because fleas live close to the floor and on pets. They are typically small, with a red dot in the centre, and often appear in small groups of three or four. If you have a cat or dog, flea bites become much more likely.

Quick comparison

  • Pattern: mosquito = scattered single welts; bedbug = lines or clusters; flea = small groups, often a central dot.
  • Location: mosquito = exposed skin; bedbug = areas exposed while sleeping; flea = ankles and lower legs.
  • Timing: mosquito = within minutes; bedbug = often delayed; flea = soon after exposure.
  • Context: bedbugs near beds and travel; fleas near pets; mosquitoes outdoors at dawn and dusk.

When to see a doctor

These three bites are usually harmless and settle on their own. Seek care if a bite shows spreading redness, warmth, or pus (possible infection), if you develop a widespread rash or feel unwell, or if you have any signs of a severe allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing or facial swelling — in which case call your local emergency number.

FAQ

Can one photo tell mosquito from bedbug bites?

Often, yes — the arrangement is the biggest clue. Lines and clusters point to bedbugs; scattered single welts point to mosquitoes. Context, like recent travel or a new mattress, helps confirm it.

Why are my bites only on my ankles?

Bites concentrated around the ankles and lower legs are a classic sign of fleas, especially in homes with pets.
